Description

This tour starts in one of the most important squares in the city, Piazza del Campidoglio, where the temple of Jupiter Capitolino once stood. In the centre of the square, designed by Michelangelo, stands the equestrian monument dedicated to the emperor Marcus Aurelius.

From the square we descend the magnificent staircase, which leads us down to the theatre of Marcello. This was transformed by the architect Baldassarre Peruzzi into a private residence for the Savelli family (later on for the Orsini family). We stroll through the streets of the Ghetto, the old Jewish quarter, where we admire the remains of the Portico d’Ottavia which once hosted a fish market. The visit ends on the Isola Tiberina, an important crossing point over the river Tevere in the early days of Rome (the current bridges which link the island to the town are of Roman origins). The island recalls the shape of a ship, and at its western tip there is a sculpture in the shape of a ship’s bow. On the island is one of the oldest hospitals of the city.
